William Horton

William “Bill” Haskell Horton, 71, of Moncks Corner, retired electrical engineer with Santee Cooper, adored husband of 37 years to Cynthia "Cindy" Garrow Horton, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017.

Bill was born June 25, 1945, in Savannah, Georgia, a beloved son of Haskell L. Horton and Mary M. Horton.

As a Child of Christ, Bill was baptized into New Life on May 15, 2013 and a member of First Christian Church, Moncks Corner. Bill claimed Romans 5: 1-5 as his Life Scripture.

A 1967 graduate of Clemson University, Bill obtained an electrical engineering degree and also served as a Company Commander of the US Army ROTC. He was honored as Distinguished Military Graduate of Clemson University. He served his country in the US Army, 1st Lt., in Vietnam.

Bill’s engineering career began at “THE Power Company”, Savannah Electric & Power and later as manager of the Horry-Georgetown Division, Santee Cooper, 1984-1993. He retired from Santee Cooper, manager of Design Engineering, in 2008 after 32 years of service. Bill was a state of South Carolina Professional Engineer Emeritus.

His passion was working Amateur Radio. W4DDK was his call sign in this hobby of over 58 years. He served as S.C. Single Sideband, Net Control 2008-2010.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his best friend- Brenda Paul of Moncks Corner; brother-in-law- R. Douglas Smoak and his wife, Lori Hull, of Charleston; a niece- Tyler Emily “Tes” Smoak of Charleston; 5 Marvin Cousins; 10 Horton Cousins; 2 Jaycocks Cousins; 3 furbabies- Moose, Scooter and Gracie.

The family would like to express their deep love and gratitude to Dr. Takami Sato, Dr. Carin Gonsalves, Nurse Navigator Renee Zalinsky, of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.; Dr. Douglas Michaelsen, Charleston Cancer Center; Dr. David Rodgers, Palmetto Primary Care; Nurse Anita of the Hospice Lodge in Mt. Pleasant; Nurse Mark, Aide Theresa and Social Worker Gale of Southern Care Hospice; The Village nurses, Chrissy, Heather and Ebony; CNA’s Stephanie and Sabrina.

A Homecoming service, with military honors, will be held at First Christian Church, Moncks Corner, Thursday evening, May 18, 2017, at 6 o’clock. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 o’clock until the hour of service, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL.

Bill was a trooper, fighting ocular melanoma since 2013. Bill was a widely respected and honorable man.
