Walter "Walt" Hale Chiles, Jr.

June 24, 1934 — September 9, 2015

Walter Hale Chiles, Jr., 81, of Moncks Corner, a Charleston area homebuilder, passed away at home Wednesday, September 9, 2015.

Walt was born June 24, 1934, in Columbia, South Carolina, to the late Walter Hale Chiles, Sr. and Ruth Knopf Chiles, and was the husband of Patricia Matthews Chiles.

He graduated from Brooklyn Cayce High School and was a 1960 graduate of The Citadel. He attended the Senior Adult Couples Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner.

A motorcycle enthusiast, he rode to Alaska, Nova Scotia and Mexico. He also took many other cross-country bike trips with his cousins and friends. He was a private pilot and enjoyed taking his children, grandchildren and neighbors for flights above Lake Moultrie.

He is survived by his wife Trisha; his children, Walter Hale Chiles, III, of Cayce, S.C., Mary Belle Chiles of Charleston, and Rebecca Chiles Medina and her husband, Bob, of Tampa, Fla.; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane Chiles of Lexington, S.C., Walter Hale "Trooper" Chiles IV, of Lexington, S.C., and Raquel Annalise Medina of Tampa; his great-grandson Sebastian Eli Chiles of Cayce, S.C.; his brother, Paul Foster Chiles and his wife, Emily, of Fort Mill, S.C. and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the nurses and aides of SouthernCare Hospice Services and Pastor James Cuttino Jr., for their kindness during Walt's illness. They also send a thank you to his brother-in-law, Michael Lowry, for his special care.

His funeral service will be held at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner, Friday afternoon, September 11, 2015 at 1 o'clock. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Charleston, at 3 o'clock. The family will receive friends at Russell Funeral Chapel from
5 to 7 o'clock, Thursday evening September 10, 2015.
