Vernon Marion Sweatman

February 9, 1924 — September 6, 2009

Vernon Marion Sweatman, 85, of Moncks Corner, husband of Clara Elizabeth Hinnant Sweatman, entered into eternal rest at his home on Sunday, September 6, 2009, after a long illness.

Mr. Sweatman was born February 9, 1924, at Holly Hill, S.C., a son of Stoll Arthur Sweatman and Mary Alice Stoutamire Sweatman. He attended elementary school at Holly Hill.

He was inducted into the U.S.Army in March 1943 during World War II. He was a member of the 272 Field Artillery Batallion, having fought in 4 major battles in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in January 1946.

Mr. Sweatman married Clara Elizabeth Hinnant on September 9, 1950. He worked in several different occupations after returning home from the war. The last two places he was employed were: United Piece Dye Works in North Charleston for 18 years in the greige room; and retired from Santee Cooper in 1975 from the general services department.

Mr. Sweatman was an avid hunter and fisherman, his hobbies being gardening and woodworking.

Surviving in addition to his devoted wife, Elizabeth, are five children; Susan Elizabeth "Beth" Fryberger and her husband, Charles, of Burbank, WA; Sharon Lynn Harvey and her husband, Robert "Bob", of Moncks Corner; Clara Alice Straughn and her husband, Richard "Rick", of Yadkinville, NC; Jennifer Anne Sadhanna of McCall, Idaho; and Robert Vernon Sweatman of Greenville, SC; five grandchildren - Susan Neer of Benton City, WA; Tammy Robertson of Moncks Corner; Nancy Mason of Kennewick, WA; Rhea Petty of Yadkinville, NC; Ricky Straughn of Greensboro, NC; nine great-grandchildren - Matthew Mason; Cameron Villarreal; Demi Villarreal; Jantsen Robertson; Collin Robertson; Justin Neer; Adam Neer; Dylan Neer and Abby Vargas, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by five brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Sweatman's funeral service will be held at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner, Thursday afternoon, September 10, at 1 o'clock. Entombment with military honors will follow in Plantation Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call at Russell Funeral Chapel from 6 until 8 P.M. Wednesday.
