Robert Ben "Ben" Fleming, cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024, at the age of 84 in Moncks Corner, S.C. Born on January 20, 1940, in Sumter, S.C., to loving parents Fleetwood Leon Fleming and Minnie Lou Sims Fleming.
Ben's life was one of notable accomplishment and unwavering dedication. A stellar athlete, he graduated from Berkeley High School with letters in baseball, basketball, track, and most notably, as the lauded quarterback of the football team. His prowess on the field led him to be the proud MVP of the North/South Football Game in 1958. Ben carried this spirit of excellence into his studies, making history as the first person in his family to attend and graduate from the University of South Carolina.
Following his education, Ben answered the call to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force. His commitment to community continued through his association with the American Legion Post 126, reflecting his steadfast patriotism. Ben devoted much of his professional life to a rewarding career in banking, until his retirement from South Coast Community Bank in Moncks Corner.
Those who knew Ben will remember him for his active involvement in the community. He was a member of the Moncks Corner Lion Club and the Men's Golf Association at Berkeley Country Club, where he pursued his passion for golf. He also served as a member of Grace Community Baptist Church.
Ben's memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife of 59 years, Patricia Ann Simons Fleming; his son, Robert Ben Fleming Jr. and his fiancée, Annie Crowley; his daughter, Beth Fleming Jolley and her husband, Robb; and his treasured grandchildren, Robert “Robbie” Ben Fleming III, Jack Hampton Fleming, Jacob Christopher Barnes, Megan Caroline Jolley, and Sarah Anne Jolley. Ben was predeceased by his sisters, Sarah Wells Thompson, Leola Mullis, and Amanda Lee Fleming, as well as his brothers, Fleetwood Leon Fleming Jr. and James Dewey Fleming.
