Robert Fred Almers, Jr., 89, of St. Stephen, husband of Lois Shealy Almers, died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Almers was born February 26, 1923, in Eutawville, the son of Robert Fred Almers, Sr., and Peggy Myers Almers.
He was a member of Macedonia Christian Church where he taught Sunday School for over 30 years. After graduating from Murray Vocational School, he served in the Merchant Marines, and later worked and retired from the Maintenance Control Division of WestVaCo.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son - Raymond Almers and his wife, Margaret, of Summerville; a daughter - Barbara Matthews of St. Stephen; a sister - Ruth Sossamon; 5 grandchildren - Tony (Tonya) Moody; Rhett (Rhonda) Moody; Paige (Les) Taylor; Amy (Roger) Hampton; Travis (Elizabeth) Almers; and 10 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers - George, Joe, and Raymond Almers; a sister - Roberta Pluhar; and son-in-law, Clarence Matthews.
His funeral service will be held in Macedonia Christian Church Sunday afternoon, April 8,2012, at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in the church cemetery directed by Russell Funeral Chapel, Moncks Corner. The family will receive friends at Russell Funeral Chapel, Saturday afternoon, April 7, 2012, between 5 and 7 o'clock, and at the church on Sunday afternoon from 1 o'clock until the hour of service.
