Ralph G Crail

Ralph G. Crail, 92, a Moncks Corner resident for 43 years, passed away in Augusta, Georgia, on December 17, 2013, following a brief illness.

Ralph was born in West Middleton, Indiana, on March 26, 1921,the son of Arch Crail and Fern Warden Crail.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ragna "Shortie" Crail; a brother, Dale; and sisters Eileen, Auldeen, Veleta, Doris and Mary Ellen. He is survived by brother, Dayton "Spike" Crail of West Middleton; son Mark Crail and wife, Pam,of Colleyville, Texas; son, Dale and wife, Pam of Evans, Georgia; grandson - Tim Campbell and wife, Billie; great grandchildren - Hunter and Brooke; granddaughter - Shannon Sawyer and husband Curtis; and great - grandchildren J. C. and Olivia.
He was a wonderful father and a loving husband. His life was shaped by the Great Depression and World War II, and he was truly part of the Greatest Generation.

A veteran for the duration, he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific War. His ship was based in Saipan and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima on air-sea rescue station, credited with rescuing 27 downed pilots. He was shipboard when the war ended.

Following the war, he joined Hercules Powder Company in Florida and retired after 37 years as the supervisor of the Carolinas forest resources division.

Mr. Crail's funeral service will be held in St. John's Baptist Church in Pinopolis at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, December 21, 2013. Interment will follow in the church cemetery directed by Russell Funeral Chapel, Moncks Corner. The family will receive friends at Russell Funeral Chapel Friday evening, December 20, 2013, between 6 and 8 o'clock.
