Dennis Radford Bates, known affectionately as Radford to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully at his lifelong home of Moncks Corner on June 8, 2024. Born on January 27, 1936, to parents Edward Dennis Bates and Mary Frances Bates, Radford led a life of community involvement, and unwavering support for local education and sports.
A devoted husband, Radford is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Barbara Hughes Bates; son- Dennis Radford "Raddy" Bates Jr., and his wife Paige; grandchildren Katherine Batkins and her husband Daniel, Jessica Ravan and her husband Shane, Laura Bates, Will Carter and his wife Katie, Anne Garrett Carter, and Brittan C. Gruber; great-grandchildren- Merritt, Henry, Owen, Caroline, and Mills. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles E. "Punkie" Bates.
Radford's educational journey, which began at Berkeley High and continued at Clemson, set him on a path of lifelong enthusiasm for his alma maters. His voice carried across the field as the announcer at Berkeley's football games years ago. His career at Oliver Furniture Company, among other ventures, was characterized by his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to customer service.
Radford was a long-time member of the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church. He had been in the Lions Club, Jaycees, and embraced the fellowship of the Masons.
The community is invited to celebrate Radford's life on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 2 P.M., at the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church. Prior to the service, the family will welcome friends starting at 1 P.M. Radford's final resting place will be Eccles United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Russell Funeral Chapel.
