Patrick Mitchum,Sr., 87, of Bonneau Beach, U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, and retiree after 40 years in the insurance business as a representative of Nationwide Insurance Company, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013, in a Moncks Corner hospital.
Pat was born September 13, 1926, in Berkeley County, the son of Patrick Mitchum and Edna Williams Mitchum.
He was a graduate of a number of insurance underwriter’s courses, having received many awards in his profession. He served 15 years in the Charleston Life Underwriter’s Association, serving as secretary, vice-president and finally as president, prior to his retirement in December 1986. He was a member of Berkeley Lodge No. 269.
He was a charter member of Rhett Avenue Christian Church and of Fort Johnson Baptist Church, prior to joining First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner. He was currently attending Russellville Christian Church.
Pat and Helen enjoyed picking and singing with musicians at many locations in the Tri-County and enjoyed entertaining friends at home. They also visited in nursing homes and private homes, where they touched many lives through their love of God. He enjoyed being active outdoors in nature.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 65 years, Helen Cooper Mitchum, are his children – Patrick Mitchum, Jr., and his wife, Early, of Bonneau Beach; Mike Mitchum and his wife, Sylvia, of Bonneau; Shirley M. Gesling and her husband, Joe, of Summerville; and Mary M. Ponds and her husband, Robert, of North Charleston; a sister – Olivia Russell; 5 grandchildren – Jennifer Simmons; David Patrick Mitchum; Ryan Cobb; Matthew McCants; and Rachael Poitras; two great grandchildren – Josie Hulett and Omari Simmons. He was pre-deceased by a son – David Wilbur Mitchum.
His funeral service will be held at Russellville Christian Church, Saturday afternoon, November 30, 2013, at 2 o’clock. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, MONCKS CORNER, Friday evening, November 29, 2013, between 5 and 7 o’clock.
