Nelson Thomas McPherson, Sr., 91, of Moncks Corner, Army veteran of World War II, passed away Friday, December 6, 2013, in a North Charleston hospital.
Mr. McPherson was born September 2, 1922, at Gibson, North Carolina, a son of Hampton H. McPherson and Sadie Hamilton McPherson.
As member of First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner, he had served as chairman of the nursery department, and as secretary for the Adult Sunday School department. He was also a long-time member of Baybur Hunting Club.
He was a retired survey engineer with the S.C. Department of Transportation, and had worked for ten more years as a field engineer with a construction company.
Surviving are his wife, Leila Small McPherson; two sons - Tommy McPherson, Jr., and his wife, Terry, of Pinopolis; and Jamie McPherson of Moncks Corner; four daughters – Kay M. Lail of Moncks Corner; Beth M. Cumbie and her husband, Deryel, of Summerville; Debbie M. Stone of Ehrhardt; and Kathy M. Rodrigue of Vinton, Louisiana; 13 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers, 5 sisters; a niece and 2 nephews.
The family expresses special thanks to Mr. McPherson’s caregiver, Bertha Green, the nursing staff on third and fourth floors of Trident Health System and Dr. Ashleigh Zacarias.
He loved the outdoors and was always working in the yard and in his little gardens. His other interests were watching sports on TV., the history channel and all nature scenes.
His graveside funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, December 10, 2013, in Berkeley Memorial Gardens, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, MONCKS CORNER. The family will receive friends at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, between 5 and 7 o’clock Monday evening
