Lewis Laverne (Verne) Pulling

October 24, 1929 — April 17, 2019

Lewis Laverne Pulling (Verne), 89, of Pinopolis, SC and Saluda, NC passed away April 17, 2019. He was born in Ft. Riley, Kansas to Col. and Mrs. Lewis Abrams Pulling. Verne was raised on military bases around the country and also at Elmlawn, his mother’s home farm in Ontario, Canada. Verne graduated from Howe Military Academy in Indiana and Purdue University where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He is a veteran, serving as a Master Sergeant in the 8th Army.

Verne began his career as a mechanical engineer with Kawneer Aluminum. He went on to found Literacy Action, the largest and oldest adult literacy agency in Atlanta, Georgia. After leaving Literacy Action he consulted on industrial training with companies such as Georgia Power and Light, Atlanta Gas, and Georgetown Steel.

Verne was an active member of both Trinity Episcopal Church in Pinopolis SC and Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda NC. He was a 25 year member of Jack William’s Sunday School class. He is a member of the Order of St. Andrews and sang in the Trinity Choir for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jane Gregg Pulling; his children, William Pulling (Eileen), Amy Pulling Yates, Dan Pulling (Sandra); step-children, Catherine Bedard (Tony) and Thomas Higdon; and grandchildren; Taylor Pulling, Kyle Caldwell, Dylan Caldwell, Jules Bedard, Matthew Pulling and Alexander Pulling. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, William Pulling.

Services will be Saturday April 20, 2019 at 2:00pm at Trinity Church, Pinopolis, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Parish Hall.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Children’s Trust of SC (www.scchildren.org), Trinity Church, Pinopolis, SC or Church of the Transfiguration, Saluda, NC.
