Lavinia Hubbard Housand, affectionately known to all as Lou, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on the 4th of January, 2024, in Summerville, South Carolina, on the very day she marked her 96th year. Born on January 4, 1928, in Sumter, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Elbert Hubbard and Eunice Antley Hubbard. Her life was a testament to love, kindness, and selfless dedication to her family and faith.
After attending Winthrop University, she culminated her studies with a graduation from the University of South Carolina. Professionally, she embarked on a career in administration, initially with the legal department of Santee Cooper and later with the Berkeley County Government legal department.
Lou first shared her life with the late William L. Shipley Sr. and later found happiness with her surviving husband, Elwood G. Housand. The legacy of her love is carried on by her devoted children, Gwen Cammons (James), sons Bill Shipley (Millie), Bob Shipley, and Brian Shipley (Marla); her brother Alan Hubbard (Becky); her step-children, Lynn Evans (Tommy), Gail Hay (Billy), Kevin Housand (Patricia), and Greg Housand (Cherie); along with her adored six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death not only by her parents but also by her brother Bert Hubbard.
A longtime active member of the Moncks Corner United Methodist Church, she continued her faith journey at Bethany United Methodist Church after moving to Summerville.
Funeral services for Mrs. Housand will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Bethany United Methodist Church, in Summerville. Friends may call at the church one hour prior, beginning at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Biggin Cemetery, at 2:30 PM, directed by Russell Funeral Chapel of Moncks Corner.
