Laree Dangerfield Huxford

February 25, 1931 — June 7, 2017

LaRee Dangerfield Huxford, 86, of Moncks Corner, widow of William Wilkes “Billy” Huxford, Sr., passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

Mrs. LaRee was born February 25, 1931, in Berkeley County, a daughter of the late John Henry Dangerfield and Viola Phillips Dangerfield.


A graduate of Berkeley High School and 1954 graduate of Winthrop College, Mrs. LaRee obtained degrees in music and elementary education. Her career began at Holly Hill High School as the first female band director in the state of South Carolina. A few years later, she transferred to Berkeley, where she taught elementary school during the day and directed the High School Marching Band in the afternoon. During this time, Mrs. LaRee also taught private music lessons to many students in Berkeley County. From 1971 to 1993, she taught second grade at Lord Berkeley Academy where she also began the concert band.

Mr. Billy and Mrs. LaRee were married March 31, 1956. They were members of First Christian Church where Mrs. LaRee played the organ and led the choir for over 40 years. Russell Funeral Chapel was also blessed to have had Mrs. Laree as an organist at their chapel for many years. Recently, she has continued singing sessions with her fellow residents at The Bridge in North Charleston.

Mrs. LaRee gave so much of herself to her family, church, and community through her teaching and music and will be greatly missed.


Surviving are four children- William “Butch” Huxford, Jr., and his wife, Pam, of Lexington; Cindy H. Thompson and her husband, Mike, of Jefferson, Ga.; Lindy H. Gregory and her husband, Scott, of Hampton, Ga.; Walter “Walt” Huxford and his wife, Lynette, of Moncks Corner; a brother- John Madison Dangerfield and his wife, Trish, of Norway, SC; twelve grandchildren- Meggan Huxford; William “Trey” Huxford III and his wife, Erica; Elise Gregory; Erin Huddleston and her husband, Sam; Ethan Thompson; Ann Hayden Huxford; Candler Gregory; Gracie Thompson; Elliott Huxford; Kendall Gregory; Hugh Huxford; Leonard-Way Huxford; one great grandson- William “Wilkes” Huxford IV. She was predeceased by a brother- Eugene Dangerfield and his wife, Betty.

Her funeral service will be held at First Christian Church, Moncks Corner, Friday afternoon, June 9, 2017, at 1 o’clock. Interment will follow in Biggin Cemetery. The family will receive friends at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL Thursday evening, June 8, 2017 from 5 to 7 o’clock.
