Howard L. Hopper Jr., known affectionately by friends and family as Lamar, passed away on May 1, 2024, in Moncks Corner, S.C. Born on Independence Day in 1948, in Gaffney, S.C., a son of the late Howard Lamar Hopper and Betty Louise Martin Hopper, he was also the widower of Shirley Tylee Hopper.

Lamar is survived by his daughter Marla Shipley and her husband Brian, his son Nat Hopper and his wife Erin, as well as his sisters Gale Thomasson and Nancy Mclachlan along with her husband Monty. His legacy continues through his adored grandchildren Joshua Shipley and Brianne Lawrence, and her husband Logan. Lamar was preceded in death by his brother Ted.

For many years, Lamar was employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, and after its closing, he continued work with contractor Mundy at DAK America. Lamar was the quintessential tinkerer, always to be found in his garage while at home.

He will be missed by those whose lives he touched. The family welcomes those who knew Lamar to reach out with their condolences and keep his memory alive in their hearts.

The family will have a private memorial in Lamar's honor at a later date.
