June Thomas Cheatwood, 74, of Virginia Beach, VA, formerly of Moncks Corner, SC, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.


June was born on Mother's Day, May 8, 1938, in Kingstree, Williamsburg County, S.C., the daughter of Leon Otis Thomas and Gwendolyn Kirton Thomas. She had one sister, Dot.


June attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia first but was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA., She had worked as a medical illustrator, a substitute high school teacher, a librarian, a secretary, an art studio hand coloring artist, a medical transcriptionist and eventually quality assurance leader for transcriptions arriving from India, a 2010 census worker, and a voting elections officer. While as a Moncks Corner DSS social worker and real estate agent in the '70s, she took care of several foster sons, along with caring for her mother and grandmother, all while raising her own three children. She was a member of MENSA, which is the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world.

Surviving are her daughter – Julia Cheatwood Block of Virginia Beach; 5 grandchildren – Shannon Block McDaniel and her husband, Chris; Nicholas A Block and his wife, Sara; Samuel J Block; Michael A Cheatwood, Jr.; Rhiannon C Justis and husband, Rich; 4 great grandchildren; a sister – Dorothy Thomas Glover; daughter-in-law, Pam Cheatwood; niece – Lynn Glover Thorsell and her husband, Jerry; 2 grandnieces; and also many more loving cousins in South Carolina and beyond, wonderful friends, and family members…one of whom held a special place in her heart, former son-in-law Lt. Billy Block, US Navy (Ret). She was pre-deceased by two sons – Lt. Commander Michael A. Cheatwood, Sr - US Navy (Ret), and Connor Cheatwood; and a granddaughter, Marcia Dawn Cheatwood.

Her graveside funeral service will be held in St. John’s Baptist Church Cemetery in Pinopolis, Monday afternoon, June, 4, 2012, at 1 o’clock, directed by Russell Funeral Chapel of Moncks Corner.
