John M. Bryant, 85, of Goose Creek, husband of Margaret DeMars Bryant passed away Monday July 20, 2020.
John was born May 20, 1935 in Darlington, a son of James Arthur Bryant and Leatha Windham Bryant and his second mother Emmie K. Bryant. John was the youngest of sixteen siblings.
A 1956 graduate of Summerville High School, John played on Coach John McKissick’s first football team. He served in the US Army National Guard and was a retired truck driver of 40 years, having worked for Extruded Aluminum, Central Motor Lines and Yellow Freight. John was a founding member of the Goose Creek Parks and Playgrounds and sat on the Board of Commissioners.
John and Margaret shared 63 years of marriage, he enjoyed spending time with her and their children and grandchildren. He never met a stranger that he didn’t touch in some way; he was always helping others. His hobbies included camping, hiking in the Smokey Mountains, and traveling the open roads, enjoying the scenery. John had a special appreciation for trees, always pointing them out to his family and asking them to take notice. He enjoyed sitting on the front porch taking in the sunshine, teaching his children and grandchildren life lessons and making lifelong memories. He was greatly loved by all and will be missed.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are seven children- Vivian Crankshaw and her husband, Charles, of Summerville; Marian Bryant of Goose Creek; Sharon Bryant and her spouse, Ronnie, of Summerville; Grace Mobbs and her husband, Danny, of Kingsland, Ga.; John Bryant, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; Authur Bryant and his wife, Trish, of Goose Creek; Bobby Garner and his wife, Elizabeth, of Summerville; grandchildren- Jennifer Willcox and her husband, Nathan, of Charleston; Christopher Crankshaw and his wife, Alissa, of Summerville; Wesley Mobbs and his wife, Sarah, of Kingsland, Ga.; Tyler Mobbs and his wife, Taylor, of Kingsland, Ga.; Clay Bryant of Greenville; AJ Bryant of Goose Creek; Olivia Bryant of Goose Creek; Chris Collins and Mike Cole; great grandchildren- Owen Willcox, Katherine Willcox, Mason Willcox, Adelynn Crankshaw, Annastyn Crankshaw, Ella Mobbs, Emory Mobbs, Berkley Mobbs and Dani Mobbs; two sisters- Margaret Norman and Patsy Wilson and her husband, Jimmy. John was predeceased by a grandson- Nathan Mobbs.
His funeral service will be held at Russell Funeral Chapel Thursday July 23, 2020 at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow in Dorchester Memory Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville, SC 29485. The family will receive friends at Russell Funeral Chapel from 10 o’clock until the hour of service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Metro North Church, 109 Central Avenue, Goose Creek, SC 29445.
