Jean Welch Solomon

March 25, 1955 — February 3, 2023

Jean Welch Solomon entered into eternal rest peacefully surrounded by family members on Friday, February 3, 2023, at the age of 67.  Jeannie was born in Charleston on March 25, 1955, the second daughter of the late Robert Southern Solomon, M.D., and Patricia Power Solomon.

Jeannie graduated from Ashley Hall School (1973) and thereafter earned her Bachelor of Science degree (1978) and later, her Masters of Health Science (1989) from the Medical University of South Carolina.  She worked as a Registered, Licensed Occupational Therapist, and taught for many years at Trident Technical College where she served as Coordinator for the Occupational Therapy Program.  She also worked as a private practitioner as well as for the Berkeley County School District.  In addition to her contributions to her profession as a practitioner, teacher, and mentor to many, Jeannie co-authored the textbooks ‘Pediatric Skills for Occupational Therapy Assistants’ now in its 5th Edition, and ‘Occupational Analysis and Group Process’ in its 2nd Edition, both of which are widely used to educate occupational therapy assistants entering the field.  For over 25 years she served on various committees for SC BabyNet, South Carolina's interagency early intervention system for infants and toddlers under three years of age with developmental delays.  She was a Fellow of the Occupational Therapy Association.

Jeannie was a devoted animal lover and had a special affinity for horses, prompting her aunt Nancy Dennis to quip: “In my next life, I want to come back as one of Jeannie’s horses.”  She loved gardening and birdwatching and spent countless hours tending to the many bird feeders in her garden.  All that knew her will miss her generous spirit and her contagious laugh.  It is fitting that Jeannie will be interred at Mepkin Abbey, a place she held dear since childhood when she would visit with her father who served as doctor to the resident monks.

Jeannie is survived by her two sisters Amelia S. Waring (Brad) and Patricia E. Solomon, nieces Amelia Waring Walker (Will), Mary “Molly” Waring Caughman (Joe), Louisa Waring Gilliatt (Tim), and seven grandnieces and nephews, of whom she was particularly fond.

A service celebrating Jeannie’s life will be held graveside on Monday, February 13, 2023, at 11:00 o’clock a.m. at the Mepkin Abbey Columbarium, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Road, Moncks Corner, SC.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mepkin Abbey, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461., or to Strawberry Chapel, 1150 Hungry Neck Blvd., Suite 334, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
