Hugh “Rod” Roderick Murchison, 77, of Pinopolis, SC, passed away on July 16, 2022, with his loving wife, children, and grandchildren by his side.
Rod was born January 13, 1945, at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, a son of Colin Campbell Murchison and Sara Wagnon Murchison. He grew up on Waccamaw Street and graduated from Dreher High School in 1963.
A Major in the USAF, and a reservist of 18 years, Rod was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and retired as Treasurer of Santee Cooper after 32 years of employment. Influenced greatly by his grandfather, an ARP Presbyterian Minister, Rod was an Elder and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner. He and Billie Roberts were also instrumental in the procurement and installation of the church bell.
Rod and Malinda had the love of a lifetime. They had been together since they were 14 years old and were married for 55 wonderful years. A loving husband, father, and grandfather Rod enjoyed time spent with his family and dogs, researching family and Civil War history, woodworking, camping, trips to the mountains, and working on old cars. He will be fondly remembered by his family, friends, and his community.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Malinda Waites Murchison, are his two daughters- Kelly Brown and her husband, Don of Pinopolis; Claudia Keller and her husband, John of Overton; one son- Hugh Murchison and his wife, Anna of Pinopolis; one brother- Colin “Cam” Campbell Murchison of Virginia; Brother-in-law- Judge Rodney A. Peeples; fourteen grandchildren- Russell Brown, Anna Brown, Roy Brown, Christopher Wilson, Eleanor Wilson, Waites Wilson, Lindsey Keller, Reed Keller, Colin Murchison, Austin Murchison, Owen Murchison, Lydia Murchison, Trace Cusick, and Ireland Cusick; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister- Sallie M. Martin.
His funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Moncks Corner, Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 1 o’clock. Interment will follow with military honors in St. John’s Baptist Cemetery in Pinopolis, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 am until the hour of service.
