Helen Bachlott Pennington, 93, of Pinopolis S.C. passed away peacefully at her home on July 25, 2021.
Born on December 25, 1927 in Campville, FL, she was the daughter of John Robert Bachlott, Jr and Helen Bailey Bachlott. She graduated from Hawthorne High School and attended Union College where she met and married her late husband, Kenneth G. Pennington. After Ken completed dental school at the University of Louisville, they moved to South Carolina where he practiced dentistry in Berkeley County for over fifty years and Helen managed both the office and Ken.
In addition to working full time, Helen was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, Vestry member and Junior Warden. She also served on the Board of Directors for Lord Berkeley Academy. Active in the community during the early years, she was a regional board member and troop leader for the Girl Scouts, a member of the local Garden Club and involved with the Berkeley Citizens Center (formerly the Mary K Center for Special Children). Helen enjoyed traveling, boating on Lake Moultrie, spending time in the mountains and serving as Ken’s co-pilot in their small Cessna 210. But most of all, she loved to garden and could usually be found in the yard with a spade in her hand.
In addition to her husband, Helen was predeceased by three brothers (Maurice, Donald, Clint); two sisters (Violet and Lillian); and two sisters in law (Mary Alice and Annette). She is survived by her favorite (only) daughter, Lisa Pennington Montgomery and several nieces and nephews. A woman of extraordinary grace, class, and tenacity, she has touched many lives and hearts.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Pinopolis, SC on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 2:00 pm directed by Russell Funeral Chapel. A Bachlott family celebration of life will also be held in St Mary’s, GA. in November. A special thank you to the innumerable caregivers who tended to her with such compassion and professionalism. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Garden Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 4678, Pinopolis, S.C. 29469; or the Medical University of South Carolina in support of the Lisa P.
