Francis Marion Kirk, Jr.

Francis Marion Kirk, Jr., age 83, of Indian Land, SC, died peacefully on September 28, 2022, in Asheville, NC, surrounded by family.

Frank was born December 14, 1938, in Moncks Corner, SC, raised in the Lowcountry, and educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and the US Naval Academy.  Graduating from Annapolis in 1961, he served 20 years as a Naval Surface Warfare Officer, including two tours of Vietnam, and one as Captain of the USS Harnett County (LST-821).  After retirement from the Navy, he earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law and was admitted to practice in 1984.  He served as an admiralty attorney for the Panama Canal Commission; privately practiced civil and criminal defense law, prosecuted child and adult abuse cases in civil court as the Berkeley County Attorney for the SC DSS, and was elected Judge of the Berkeley County Probate Court.  Frank served as President of the Saint John’s Hunting Club for five years.  Upon retirement in 2003, he expressed his love of Christ through many ministries, especially singing in the choir, and enjoyed all forms of outdoor activities including birding, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Lindy; a daughter- Mary Alston Kirk; a son- Robert Marion Kirk and his wife, Martha; five grandchildren- Nathanial Oliver and William McKay Smith, Willa Anne, Francis Marion, and Vada Virginia Kirk; a niece- Videau Katherine Ferebe Simons; a nephew- FM Kirk Simons and his wife, Laura; former wife and mother of his daughter, Alston Osgood Wolf; and brother-in-law- John Beck and his wife, Martha.  He was predeceased by his parents, Francis Marion Kirk and Videau Legaré Beckwith, and his sister, Videau Kirk Simons.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on October 5, 2022, at All Saints Anglican Church in Weddington, NC.  A small burial service will be held at 1 pm on October 7, 2022, at the Kirk Family Cemetery in Cross, SC, directed by Russell Funeral Chapel.  The family cemetery, which does not have facilities and is beside a dirt road, is near the intersection of Cord Way and Devans Estate Lane, accessed via Spiers Landing Rd.
