Elsie Jane (Burleson) Scurry

March 8, 1936 — March 2, 2022

Ms. Elsie Jane Burleson Scurry entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.  Her memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, March 10th at the First Baptist Church in Bowman, SC.  Arrangements are being made by Russell Funeral Home in Moncks Corner, SC.

Ms. Scurry was born on March 8, 1936, in Barnardsville, North Carolina, daughter of the late Vantus Van and Edna Mae Burleson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six siblings and Mr. Robert Ellis Case, Mr. James B Mills, Sr., and Mr. Leonard Paul Scurry.  She is survived by two sisters, Ms. Betty Boone of Pickens SC, Ms. Martha Jackson of Chapin, SC; and her brother Mr. Paul Burleson (Beulah) of Orangeburg SC.

She is also survived by her five children: Robert “Danny” Case (Darlene) of Asheville NC, Debbie Miler (Richard) of Summerville SC, Edna “Cricket” Grooms (Donald) of St. Stephen SC, Rita Berry (Chris) of Summerville SC and Stephanie Peagler, of Moncks Corner SC. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Elsie was always involved with her church and loved gospel music.  She loved going to Christian Gospel concerts, especially those led by The Gaither Vocal Band and Friends.  She dedicated her life to children and spent many years operating a childcare service for families she cared for.  But the love of her life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She also loved spending time with her sisters in the mountains.  Coming from a large family (nine siblings) and growing up in western North Carolina, she had a love for the great outdoors and any adventures that would bring her family together.  Especially at Christmas time, where the extended Burleson family (usually over 130 people) would have their annual Christmas party, share food, put on skits for entertainment, sing music together, and have one of the family members dressed as Santa Clause hand out a few gifts.

The family extends their appreciation to all who cared for Ms. Scurry and held her up in thought and prayer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to the Dorchester Children’s Advocacy Center, Lowcountry Food Bank, or the nonprofit/charity of your choice.
