Edgar Jewell Walker, affectionately known as Jewell, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, at Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital in Moncks Corner, S.C., after a brief illness. He was born on October 1, 1930, in Etowah County, Alabama, to parents Robert Pinkey and Beulah Farmer Walker. As one of fourteen siblings, all but one sibling has preceded him in death.
A proud United States Army veteran, he honorably served his country during the Korean War. In 1948, he made his way to the Low Country of South Carolina, initially residing in Mt. Pleasant before moving to Moncks Corner in 1958. He dedicated many years to the sawmill and timber industries, working for Mr. George Herrin and Mr. P.O. Mead. He later transitioned into automotive and diesel repair, where he successfully operated a heavy machinery repair shop in Macedonia.
Jewell was deeply involved in the local stock car racing community. He competed for many years at Summerville and Myrtle Beach Speedways, imparting his knowledge and skills as a crew chief for his son, Edgar Keith Walker, and his dear friend, Morris Wilburn. He was also a highly regarded pit crew member and mechanic for countless friends within the racing community.
Above all, Jewell was renowned for his steadfast devotion to his late wife, Helen Burnett Walker, who preceded him in death in 2014. The love he displayed was boundless; during Helen’s declining health, Jewell became her dedicated caregiver, even mastering the art of applying her makeup perfectly each day before they went out. He is also preceded in death by his son, Edgar Keith Walker, in 2012.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Pauline Walker of Moncks Corner; his son, Blair (Jenny) Walker of Sharpsburg, GA; his daughter, Carmen Walker Massingill (Lynn) of Senoia, GA; his grandsons, Seth (Anna) Walker of Milledgeville, GA, Jacob (Kenzie) Walker of Denver, CO, and Xander Massingill; and his granddaughters, Maddison and Baylee Massingill. He will also be missed by his great-grandsons, Anderson and Thomas Walker, and fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Morris and Barbara Wilburn for their steadfast love and support, ensuring that Jewell was able to maintain his independence throughout his final days.
Those wishing to pay their respects are invited to a visitation on Sunday, January 19, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, followed by a service at 3:00 PM in Russell Funeral Chapel. Following the service, Jewell Walker will be laid to rest at Berkeley Memorial Gardens.
