Clarice Mundy Coghlan

Clarice Mundy Coghlan SUMMERVILLE - Clarice Mundy Coghlan's active life ended Sunday morning after more than 101 years. Originally from Greenwood, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Gertrude "Hootie" Collins Mundy and Robert Frank Mundy. A graduate of South Carolina State Hospital Nursing Program, she cared for patients and subsequently worked in research on malaria during world War II, collecting material from military hospitals across the country. Following several months in Summerville, caring for her sister, Monteze Mundy Snyder, she joined her spouse, the late Joseph E. Coghlan in the Los Angeles, California area in 1948. There she served as the office nurse for a physician. Later she sold real estate and enjoyed making special celebrations with the neighboring children with each sale. Clarice was an active volunteer for Goodwill of Los Angeles, earning recognition for her service. She and Joe moved to South Carolina in the early 1990s, and she became a Summerville resident about 15 years ago.

Clarice Coghlan had an eye for beautiful objects and artful de;cor and was a successful gardener who enjoyed thrift store shopping and collecting antique jewelry. She contributed generously to support needs of marginalized peoples, liked good dance music and paid careful attention to maintaining good heath. She had a deep interest in a wide variety of spiritual beliefs and practices and was a dear friend to people of all ages, who remember her smile and joyful outlook. She is survived by her two sisters, Monteze Mundy Snyder of Rock Hill, SC and Juanita Ramsey Desmond of Marshall, NC; nieces, Clare Ramsey Jordan of Matthews, NC, Anita Ramsey Ward of Marshall, NC, Judi Mundy Burns of Greenwood, SC, Monteze Mundy Snyder of Richmond, IN, Jane Hamilton of Visalia, CA; and dear friend, Barbara Dale of Seabrook Island, SC. Her surviving nephews are Roger Eastman of Harrisville, NH, Robert Eastman of Chattanooga, TN, Howard F. Snyder of Rock Hill, SC and near-nephew, Samuel Kramer of Columbia, SC, as well as numerous great nephews and great nieces and special friends from her years in California.

The memorial services will be held at 3 pm Thursday, August 7, 2014,in the Nixon Dining Room at the Presbyterian Village in Summerville. Interment will take place beforehand at the Summerville Cemetery at 1 pm, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL of Moncks Corner.
