Calhoun Wyndham Umphlett, Sr., 95, of Moncks Corner, retired former owner of Umphlett Lumber Company and husband of 68 years to Virginia Eubanks Umphlett, passed away Monday, July 11, 2016.
Born June 28, 1921, in Charleston County, Calhoun was a son of Mills W. Umphlett and Jennie Wyndham Umphlett.
He was a 1939 graduate of Berkeley High School and a 1943 graduate of Clemson University, obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering. He served as a Captain of the Army Corps of Engineers, also having served 2 years in the China Burma India Theater during WWII.
He had served as an elder of First Presbyterian Church, and established a Presbyterian College Scholarship for Berkeley County.
Calhoun was a former President of Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association as well as The National Association of Independent Lumbermen. He had been a member of the Presbyterian College Board of Visitors; American Legion Post #126; VFW 9509 and Moncks Corner Rotary Club, where he was the recipient of the Paul Harris Award.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter- Peggy J. M. Umphlett of Columbus, NC; two sons- Calhoun Wyndham Umphlett, Jr. of Union, SC; Carleton Mills Umphlett and his wife, Evelyn, of Columbus, NC; four grandchildren- Angela Mohney and her husband, Curt; Samuel C. Umphlett; Luke C. Umphlett; Eden Elaine Umphlett; one great grandchild- Cora Mohney; a sister- Mary U. Workman and her husband, Glenn. He was predeceased by two sisters- Edith U. West and Ida Nan U. Almers Spann; two brothers- Clyde Umphlett and Wayne Umphlett.
The family would like to express their thanks to Linda Dillon for her companionship and dedication during this time and to Janelle Belk of Roper Home Health for her care and attention.
His funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Moncks Corner, Friday morning, July 15, 2016, at 11 o’clock. Interment will follow in Biggin Cemetery, with military honors, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel Thursday evening, July 14, 201 6 from 6 to 8 o’clock.
