Betty Mann Smith

July 7, 1926 — July 16, 2017

Betty Mann Belangia Smith, 91, of St. Stephen, died peacefully Sunday surrounded by her loved ones. A celebration of her life will be held at The Village at Summerville chapel on Tuesday, July 18 at 3:00 pm, with visitation to follow.

First married to the late W.W. Belangia and widow of Otis Patrick Smith, Betty was born July 7, 1926 in Fort Meade, Florida, the only child of Leland Francis Mann and Arrie Lee Taylor Mann.

Betty made her life in St. Stephen as a homemaker, part owner of Belangia Oil Co, and in later years worked for the Berkeley County School district. She loved people and dedicated her life to taking care of others. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend to just about everyone she met. Gregarious by nature, she always enjoyed a good joke, socializing with friends, and traveling. Betty lived the past eight years at The Village in Summerville. Never one to sit still, she wore many hats from greeter to shopkeeper, always making people laugh with her antics. She was a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church, where she was church organist and choir director.

Betty was a devoted mother to her daughter, Brenda Belangia Barry and her husband, Jim, and to her son Reverend Dr. Wash W. Belangia and his wife, Elaine, as well as her nieces and nephews; a much beloved and adored “BB” to her grandchildren Jamie Barry Winningham, Charlotte Barry Campbell, Katherine Barry Verano, Kelli Belangia Shrivastava, and Reverend Dr. Webb Belangia. She has eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be given in her name to the St. Stephen United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 278, St. Stephen, South Carolina 29479.
